Finding room for “Me Time” in 3 steps
Finding time for yourself seems like an easy enough goal to accomplish, yet how often do you actually make time just for you? You know how important “Me time” is, right? Yet it seems sometimes we go out of our way to avoid sitting in stillness and tuning into ourselves to really receive the nourishment our soul desires.
“Me time” is more than just plopping down on the couch, watching reality TV, and shovelling a tub of ice-cream into your mouth. While this may sound ideal and relaxing, it doesn’t actually serve your wellbeing in any way. So, we have provided you with three ideas that can help you tune into yourself and really experience the joy of time for yourself.
3 ways to bring more mindfulness and “Me time” into your life
- Instead of just plopping down on the couch, try sitting or lying down with the intention of relaxing and quietening your mind. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Scan your body and notice how it feels. You don’t need to do anything else – just feel and breathe. Doing this for even 5 minutes will provide you with a sense of peace and help clear your mind of all the chatter.
- Go ahead and eat your tub of ice-cream (there are so many dairy-free options available now that taste fantastic). But rather than shovelling it in without a thought, eat it with purpose. Be completely aware of how it feels to scoop it out, raise the spoon to your mouth, and the experiences you feel as it hits your tastebuds. What does it feel like swallowing it? Can you feel it in your tummy too? This is called mindful eating and it will change your relationship with food in a really positive way.
- Take a walk and really drink in your environment. Notice your feet hitting the pavement, and all the sights and sounds around you. This helps to bring you into this very moment – into the now, and it is a beautiful way to clear your mind to create space and stillness.
- Bonus step – turn the TV off for an hour and read a book instead.
You will be amazed at how many answers to problems will be revealed, and how creative ideas just pop in to your head, when you are aware and conscious of the present moment. As you practice stillness and awareness of the present moment, slowly but surely you will find the time and space opening up in your life more often to allow that “Me time” you crave.
